Photos | ![]() | Twelve Graham children Twelve of the fourteen children of Edward Graham and Margaret Daly. Hold the mouse pointer over a face to see who that person is. Holding the mouse over a face in the picture will cause that person's name to appear. As far as identifying the children is concerned there was, with one exception, no real difficulty. The back row comprises the four eldest children from left to right Thomas, Agnes, John and Edward. The middle group comprises the three youngest children Effie, Margaret and James. The two flanking girls are the only remaining females Mary and Susan. The boy to Mary's left is Peter. This leaves just William and Joseph to identify. William is the older of the two and, in my opinion, the boy at the front, if standing, would be taller than the boy standing between Susan and James. I have, therefore, identified the boy at the front as William and the boy standing as Joseph. If anybody out there can tell me anything different then let me know. The two missing children are Jane (born 1919) and Elizabeth (born 1921) Of the two younger children, James seems to be between 3 and 4 years old and Effie about 18 months. John is still in his army uniform so has not yet been demobbed. From this I would estimate that the picture was taken some time in 1919. |
![]() | Some of Edward and Maggie's children A photo of some of the adult Graham children with their mother, Maggie, and father, Edward. I think the photo was taken in June 1940 and I think the possible reason for the get together was the 60th birthday of Maggie. An explanation of why I came to this conclusion is given below. The man in uniform, Jimmy Graham, enlisted in the army on 18th April 1940 and served his basic training with the Cameron Highlanders in Inverness. The uniform that he is wearing appears to be that of the Cameron Highlanders with the distinctive pom-pom on the beret. Jimmy left the Cameron Highlanders and was posted to the Green Howards on the south coast of England on the 27th June 1940. The photo was, therefore, taken prior to that date. In war time the basic training was for a period of eight weeks, then leave and then posting to a new regiment. Jimmy's eight weeks of basic training were up around the 13th June giving him two weeks leave before joining the Green Howards. The photo was therefore taken after the 13th June when Jimmy was home on leave. The only event of significance in the period between the 13th and the 27th was the 60th birthday of Maggie, the mother of the family, on 25th June and I feel certain that is what this photo commemorates. Run the mouse pointer over the faces to see a label with the name of the person. Clicking on the label will take you to their record. |
